Science and Supplement News: Green Tea Extract for Rosacea
Researchers in California have reported that a cream containing green tea extract seems to quell the signs of rosacea, a skin condition affecting the face that can cause redness, pimples and visible blood vessels. Dermatologists at the University of California in San Francisco tested the cream, called polyphenone, on 60 female rosacea patients between the ages of 25 and 50. Half used the cream on their faces twice a day for four weeks; the other half of the group applied an inactive cream. The treatment brought about a 70 percent reported improvement. Further study will be needed to confirm these results.
Wow, 70% improvement in 4 weeks is actually pretty amazing!

Bravo.

Define "improvement", then I'll be impressed.

sorry to discourage you millerlite but zenmed rosacea products are not effective. Everyone I have chatted with online who has used their products haven't had any good results.
I personally used the zenmed rosacea support serum for about 2 weeks. During this time I started having really watery and itchy eyes so I automatically thought that I had developped ocular rosacea. But then I stopped using the zenmed cream, which by the way smells like crap and was burning my face, and my eyes returned to normal. I think there are essential oils in this product that are very irritating to the eyes and skin. I am currently trying a product called Clinique CX Redness Relief and so far after only one week, there is actually some improvement. It's also fragrance free, doesn't irritate my skin or my eyes. While doing a search on the internet for this cream, I came across a review from the Toronto beauty expo I think, where a woman mentioned that this cream had eliminated her rosacea symptoms. Since I can't get it in Canada, I bought it on ebay. I'll let you know if it's worth it or not.
JimJimson, I am as skeptical as you are with any new discovery, I just decided to post this because this morning when I read my emails, I recieved a weekly health bulletin by Dr. Andrew Weil who I admire so much, and there were three important headlines...one about lung cancer, another about something I don't remember and the third one about rosacea and green tea. I thought it was very interesting and I suppose that even though the results are still preliminary, it can't hurt if someone wants to try out a facial cream made with green tea. The worst thing it can do is not work...To answer you question about improvement, I suppose a 70% improvement is a 70% reduction in rosacea symptoms including redness and flushing. I believe the results are quite significant since they were done with 60 people and not just 1 person. But anyways, the good news is research is being done and something will be found that works, I am confident about that.

Well, to the best of my knowledge, there are lots of treatments (including natural ones) for permanent redness, but there is so little we can do for flushing. I've heard green tea extract is effective in treating rosacea, and I've heard that it isn't. Frankly, if it's another treatment for permanent redness or papules then that's all well and good, but we need something that works against flushing more.
If someone could confirm that the extract has a positive effect on flushing then that would be an excellent discovery, however I'm doubtful this is the case. Thanks for the info though, Mila.

Hi Mila,
I tried products from Pevonia and alot of them contain green tea. I found the products I've tried do help to calm my skin when it's irritated.

Have Dr.Nase said anything about this product?
Title: Re: Read This! Post by: [cookie] on 04/10/05 at 18:00:41
That's all fair and well for a product to "cure" permanent redness, but what about permanent redness NOT caused by dryness or some sort of psoriasis-type disorder?
I have permanent redness, like many on here, which is NOT caused by any dryness. In fact, I moisturise my already oily face daily.
So please, if you're going to exclaim that there are so many products which cure permanent redness, I'd certainly be interested in hearing more from you, especially as I have not found one single topical treatment which helps in this skin condition.

cookie, have you explored natural supplements that strengthen skin capillaries?
I'm talking about 1 to 3 grams of vitamin C with either grape seed extract or pycnogenol/enzogenol. Pycnogenol is french pine bark extract...enzogenol is New Zealand Pine Bark Extract...they have similar qualities.
You could try 400 to 600 mg of either of this supplements daily. They block histamine which can cause flushing, allergic reactions and asthma, they are powerful anti-inflammatory agents so they reduce inflammation, they strengthen collagen and skin capillaries.
You could also at the same time search for a topical cream made with pycnogenol or grape seed extract. Treating the problem internally and externally might increase your chances of success.

I have been taking many supplements (including 500mg of slow-release Vit C) for about 3 months - I don't think I've noticed any change.
Since I've been exploring the possibilities, both scientific and of the more homeopathic nature, I think my only chances of getting significant success is with lasers, namely IPL.
At present, I just feel that most, if not all topicals are useless for redness. As for supplements, they have their place in making the skin stronger and more robust, but again, have little affect on redness -- in my experience, at least.
One supplement I have not tried is grape seed extract - I will look into this.

I've had a search and I can't find anywhere where I can buy grape seed extract +... the other thing... in supplement form which wasnt a US site.. I live in the UK.. and even selecting "uk sites only" seems to bring up too many US sites..
how much GSE and .. the other stuff... do i need per tablet? How many mg's etc?
Thanks

This may be true of present day topicals, but if you want to stop flushing and reduce redness, then the topical route would be the best one to research.
Title: Re: Pevonia Post by: LadyBug on 04/12/05 at 23:01:38
LessRed- Thanks for the tip on this company, Pevonia. I did a quick search and found their website. Any of their products that you would recommend or steer clear of?
I've been using some stuff from a French company called "Avene." So far, its the only moisturizer I've been able to put on my skin. Unfortunately, not all their products are available in the U.S.
Title: Re: Read This! Post by: TipToe on 04/13/05 at 13:25:09
cookie, Dr. Nase recommends 200 mg 2 to 3 times a day of grape seed extract or pycnogenol.
I'm in Canada so I don't know where you can get it in the UK. I buy some supplements at www.vitaminshoppe.com and I think they ship internationally. They have lots of products.
You also mentioned you were doing homeopathy. I think you started a few months ago right? Well homeopathy in my opinion, is probably the most effective medicine - of all medicines, natural or not, for skin diseases because it addresses the root causes. That being said, it is a very slow acting form of therapy because it stimulates the body to heal itself instead of just rapidly suppressing symptoms, so it takes time.
While doing a search on the internet, I cam across a woman who wrote an article where she mentions she was cured of rosacea through homeopathy. She was on the medicines for 18 months, so that's 1 year and a half. Maybe you haven't given this therapy enough time.

Both gse and pyncnogenol can be found in Holland and Barret. I wouldn't swear by the quality of their products though. ( The gold standard for GSE is 95% phenolic compounds. HandB fall short of this, I fancy.)
If you have an independent health shop nearby the may well sell the Solgar range of supplements. Solgar are highly regarded. The quality is reflected in the price, however:
30 x 100mg GSE @ £21 Given the recdommended doses (above), that's £40/month. Ouch.
Pyncnogenol is more expensive still.
Kordel's enzogenol capsules( with a few other goodies like zinc and vit c thown in) might be worth a look.

I pay close to 200$ a month on natural supplements....ouch!! But they are well worth it in my opinion.
Title: Re: Read This! Post by: GJ on 04/14/05 at 17:01:58
Canadian dollars, TT? Monopoly money doesn't count. ;)
An expensive business for sure.
Title: Re: Read This! Post by: TipToe on 04/15/05 at 11:34:49
yes 200$ CDN money ;)
I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke and I don't do drugs so I have to spend my money on something right? hehe
Title: Re: Read This! Post by: GJ on 04/15/05 at 12:08:28
Absolutely!
I would be interested to hear your regimen.
I usually take ester-c, GSE or enzogenol from time to time and flirt with flaxseed oil and rutin occasionally.
I also seem to have recently bought a bottle of green tea extract capsules. Must have seemed like a good idea at the time!

Hi Lady Bug,
I would recommend Gentle Lotion RS2. It doesn't sting at all, even after I shave. There is another product, I'm at my girl friends place and don't have it handy, I believe it's called Ligne Rose concentrate. Pevonia has an entire line dedicated to rosacea and sensitive skin types.
